Launched in 1997, this Subaru Impreza WRX STI Type R is the sports version of the Impreza WRX. Underneath the hood is the ferocious EJ20 engine that unleashes 276hp at 6,500 rpm and 253.1 lb-ft of torque.
The Type R is fitted with the same hardware as the 4-door sedan WRX STI. The gearing is different as it uses a close ratio transmission with a lower gear ratio. The front brakes are the identical 4-pot 16″ ventilated discs, but the rear wheels use large-diameter discs. The Type R is also 22 lb lighter than the sedan.
The Type R features a rear differential with mechanical LSD, hard-type suspension, and a reinforced rear axle. Besides faultlessly overwhelming power, the engine generates stomach-turning acceleration. The stability and handling are phenomenal. A truly matchless car which can easily compete with cars from the next class up.
