Nissan has vastly improved the Silvia S15’s chassis over previous models. The best-selling version is the turbo-charged Nissan Silvia S15 Spec R. This goes to show the strong driver preference for sports models. Under the hood of the Silvia Spec R is an SR20DET engine, generating a maximum output of 247hp – almost 30hp higher than its predecessor.


The Silvia Spec R does this whilst maintaining high mid-range torque. Considering it is a turbocharged car, the SR20DET engine delivers excellent throttle control and response at partial throttle, allowing the driver to take the Spec R’s front engine/rear drive performance to the limit. The S15’s engine and cornering performance are really superb.


While a high-rpm engine may show faster acceleration and top speed, a car like the Silvia Spec R is actually faster in the most commonly used speed range. Weighing only 2,750 lbs, the Spec R is light for a modern car of this size. The 6-speed manual transmission has the perfect balance between sportiness and daily city driveability.


The weight distribution has been changed compared to the S14, while handling has been improved considerably by various upgrades, one being a Torsen limited-slip differential. Another step in the Silvia’s natural evolution from the S14 is a Super HICAS steering system. It is only featured in the manual transmission Spec R. This system improves maneuverability and stability at high speeds.


The tires used are the same as found on the previous S14 models. Nevertheless, the Nissan S15 Silvia has an excellent chassis for a front engine rear-wheel drive sports car which is well-matched to the engine. This model changes featured in the Nissan Silvia Spec R S15 can be considered a huge success.
