The Nissan Silvia S13 was produced from 1988 to 1994. It appeared in 1988 to immediate acclaim. This was mostly due to the styling, as a good looking coupe body was something not so common at the time. The drive quality was the next factor, as its rear-wheel drive ensured a light and sporty drive.
The engine initially was a 1.8-liter CA18 and it was later replaced by a bigger 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder DOHC SR20. The top-of-the-range Nissan Silvia S13 K’s featured a turbocharged SR20 that produced 172hp and 166.3 lb-ft of torque while the Q’s / J’s featured an NA SR20DE delivering 133hp / 117.1 lb-ft.
Its relatively light weight of 2,470 lb (K’s version) and the 172hp engine combined to give a pleasurable sensation of acceleration, and a nippy drive. Also, its light steering and nimble handling meant that anyone could easily enjoy driving it, making it an ideal car for beginners.
