The 1.5-liter, 102hp Honda Civic DX/LX engine and the 1.6-liter, 125hp Civic EX engine are both single overhead camshaft, 16-valve, in-line, 4-cylinder designs. Made of aluminium alloy, their lower mass helps reduce overall vehicle weight, which in turn helps overall performance.
All 16 valves are operated by a single overhead camshaft (SOHC), instead of the dual overhead camshafts used in other 16-valve 4-cylinder engines. Engine efficiency and reliability benefit from SOHC’s lower friction and reduced mechanical complexity.
