The 1.5-liter, 102hp Honda Civic DX/LX engine and the 1.6-liter, 125hp Civic EX engine are both single overhead camshaft, 16-valve, in-line, 4-cylinder designs. Made of aluminium alloy, their lower mass helps reduce overall vehicle weight, which in turn helps overall performance.

All 16 valves are operated by a single overhead camshaft (SOHC), instead of the dual overhead camshafts used in other 16-valve 4-cylinder engines. Engine efficiency and reliability benefit from SOHC’s lower friction and reduced mechanical complexity.

Additionally, the efficient and compact allows for more overall interior space. The outstanding efficiency and overall performance of the Civic engine make it a classic example of the Honda approach to engine design.

Smooth, powerful and technically sophisticated, it will cruise economically at highway speeds, yet its ample low- and mid-range torque makes it responsive and easy to drive around town.
